Project Overview

To carry on our project of network design, we identified a room where computers are present and all the needed facilities are present. We chose IT5 because it seemed convenient and accessible for all of us. The prevailing condition of the room will inspire us to do our project with interest and cooperation..

Objectives:

To develop network design for the IT5 of the CICT Building that will generate connection between the computers for future use.

Network Installation

Computer Network Installation is an efficient way or guideline to install a good network in IT5. Computer Network is a combination of technique, physical connections and computer programs is used to link two or more computers. Also, it allows different nodes to share information, files, printers, and other resources within the network.

A proper installation of network provides effective data transfer and it can eliminate transmission flows like noise, attenuation, latency and it is wise to know what hardware does your network can support.

The kind of topology that we are going to use is star topology. Wherein the workstation is connected via connectivity device like switch. We suggest that we will be connecting the 24 nodes in 1 switch with 24 ports and that should be connected using a category 5. We will install a Windows Server 2003 to 1 computer to act as a server for the entire network.

Advantages of Star Topology
  • Easy to install and wire.
  • No disruptions to the network then connecting or removing devices.
  • Easy to detect faults and to remove parts.

Disadvantages of Star Topology
  • Requires more cable length than a linear topology.
  • If the hub or concentrator fails, nodes attached are disabled.
  • More expensive than linear bus topologies because of the cost of the concentrators.

TP-Link SF-1024 24-port Switch

P3,460.00

L-SF1024 24-port 10/100Mbps Ethernet Switch is designed for SOHO (Small Office/Home Office) or workgroup users. Rack-mount size metal case design combined with a safety certified internal power supply make the Switch the most robust product which is very cost-effective for less than 24 users environment. The plug-and-play and auto-negotiation capabilities allow the Switch to auto-detect its link partner (Ethernet adapter, for example) with the best speed. Each port provides full bandwidth (Maximum with 200Mbps in full duplex mode) without a traditional hub´s collision phenomenon downgrading the performance. All ports can be the uplink (cascade) port which is provided to link to another Switch for more ports expansion. Easy read LED indicators are supported for cable installation and normal operation diagnostics. The Switch can be used on desktop and rack-mount

Wiring Standards and Procedures

Introduction

In designing a network design, one factor that we need to know is the hardware components that describe all the physical components of a network, such as the router, hub, cables, switch, NIC and other connectivity device. These device help us to control and extend the usable size of a growing network. Also, to allow greater number of computers to exist on the network.
Network hardware is a device or physical component that is used to connect computers in a network.

STAR TOPOLOGY

In star topology, every node on the network is connected through a central device, such as hub or switch. Star topologies are usually built with twisted-pair or fiber-optic cabling. Any single cable on a star network connects only two devices, so a cabling problem will affect two nodes at most.

Switch

Switch operate at the Data Link Layer of the OSI model. Switch increase network performance by reducing the number of packets transmitted to the rest of the network. The advantage of switch are it increase available network bandwidth, with switches, there is reduced workload on individual computers, it increase network performance, there are fewer frame collisions because switch create collision domains for each connection (a process called microsegmentation ), switches have an unlimited number of prots and connect directly to workstations.

RJ-45

The standard connectors used with shielded twisted-pair and unshielded twisted-pair cabling. "RJ" stand for registered jack.
Crossover cable is a twisted-pair patch cable in which the termination locations of the transmit and recieve wire on one end of the cable are reversed.
Straight-through cable is a twisted-pair patch cable in which the wire terminations in both connectors follow the same scheme.
